THE WINTER DANCE
Please attend in formal attire

The snow does not fall in Southern California, but frost and ice do cover the landscape in the early mornings. Your horse will need some extra time to warm up in this December weather and you might want to blanket him or her at night. The average daytime high is 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

I can dim the lights and sing you songs full of sad things
We can do the tango just for two
I can serenade and gently play on your heart strings
Be your Valentino just for you

Ooh love - ooh lover boy
What're you doing' tonight, hey boy
Set my alarm, turn on my charm
That's because I'm a good old-fashioned lover boy

The gentle, slightly jazzy music wouldn't last for long, at least not with Alan Macbeth in the hall that night. No, this evening was in store for something a little more rambunctious, if he had anything to say about it and Alan always had something to say about everything, whether his comment be helpful or spiteful. The British youth was well known for doing the unexpected and the dangerous and not caring about what anyone else thought of him. But for all his well-publicized stunts, Alan could dress himself without portraying himself as a complete fool.

His shoes, slick with their shine, squeaked against the floor as he marched briskly into the hall, one hand in the pocket of his black dress pants. He was wearing a jet-black jacket, (the only "formal" jacket he owned that wasn't meant for the hunt or the show ring) which was covering his red and black waistcoat. It didn't seem that he had been too exacting when he had put his tie on, for it was slightly askew, but only slightly. He had absolutely nothing to attempt and tame his wild sandy locks, except for funning a comb through them, and so they cascaded over his blue eyes in their usual manner of casual elegance. As was the norm, the ladies' man looked his usual head-turning self, only tonight he exhibited something remotely foreign: class. And his dressy clothes did not make him feel awkward or out of place in the slightest; instead he took it all in stride, shoving both hands in his pockets as soon as he had slipped through the door an had entered the room.

Although he had never been a fan of jazz, he had tolerated most forms of music fairly well, even for someone so entirely opinionated, but this selection of sappy jazz pieces were sappier than some of the sappiest songs he had ever heard (and all of those had been of the jazz genre). He frowned slightly, where was the rock and roll, where was something...a little more engaging than this? He was supposed to be at the school formal dance, not at some fancy ball.

Having asked no one to the social event and having nothing better to do with himself at that moment, he deftly navigated his way through the crowd, or lack thereof, that was beginning (he hoped) to gather in the hall. This was lame, lame music, lame turnout and lame energy in the air and he demanded that the atmosphere improve so he might justify dressing up like this and missing out of daring the first year boys to run into the girls' bathroom stark naked. And, making his way over to the dark corner, he slipped behind the black covers that hid the stereo from few and set about messing with it, searching through the playlist. It soon became apparent that there was nothing of true interest playing o n the device and if he wanted to get anything done, he might as well start rummaging . With nefarious thoughts in mind, he pawed through a plastic tube full of thumb drives and CDs, finally pulling out one that looked promises. He inserted it into the stereo, caring nothing for discrete manners, pressed play, cranked up the volume and prepared himself for the surprised mutters that would follow the rock 'n' roll music blasting out on high sound.

Then he looked up at the silhouette, looming above him and illuminated by the colored lighting

Take a ton of pictures! That's what her mother had told her hours ago. Some where in a phone call home to her mother, she had made the excruciatingly painful mistake of mentioning the winter dance to her mother. Of course, her mother had only assumed that her beloved middle child was not only going to the dance, but was being escorted by a handsome young man and a group of friends to boot. Where exactly she had gotten the idea, Lynne had no clue. And try as she might, her mother wouldn't listen to any 'nonsense' about her staying in her dorm and that had left her thinking, 'Oh. Bollocks.'

How was she supposed to ignore this? Honestly? Honestly?! She couldn't.

A few days ago, she had ambled into town, grumbling profanities and cursing the world. Dances appalled her, dancing attempts were embarrassing, and dresses? Dresses made her downright uncomfortable. How unfortunate that she had not made a close friend that she could force to shop with her. She could only take pictures of the dresses she considered and send them home to her family.

The dress she ended up choosing had been an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Her mother positively gushed over the silly thing. Secretly, Lynne had been glad. So yes, she was still uncomfortable in a dress, but at least she looked damned good in the process. Sassy black heels and a simple necklace completed her formal look.

Never again. The bitter thought snarled in the front of her mind. Lynne had taken so much time and put too much thought into this stupid dance and for what? A dud of a party. Warrior Falls had an excellent teaching system but when it came to hosting parties for the students, it needed serious work. Granted the night was still young, but her patience was already wearing thin and she was ready to sprint back to her dorm and climb into her comfy clothes.

That was until a certain mop of blonde hair caught her attention. Figures. Of course the stalker of Warrior Falls would be here. What better way to harass people than attending a school function? She smirked to herself as she watched him move across the floor.

She stood up. She must be desperate. She followed his movement through the crowd to the stereo tucked away in the corner. She really must be very desperate. She passed through the black curtains just as the music changed and cheers erupted from several students on the dance floor.

"What are you doing, Macbeth?"

"What are you doing, Macbeth?" Came the irate-sounding female voice and for a moment, Alan froze, wide-eyed, like a child who had been caught doing something naughty. Then his smile returned, plastered onto his already mischievous face and when he spoke, it was wither carefully measured sarcasm.

"Oh, you learned my name, did you, Her." He said, pulling himself into a standing position after clambering off his one-knee kneeling stance. "Congratulations. What else have you learned since then, the alphabet?" His customary greeting to here did not come off as sounding very pleasant, but in truth, he was very pleased to see her. Someone whom he knew and someone whom he enjoyed playing his little "mind games" on, would allow him to continue thinking that perhaps the night would not be a complete waste. The music began to pick up as the sound of electric guitars blared out into the room. The sound hit the roof and bounced back, making that lovely, first-time rock 'n' roll sound when the genre is played for the first time in a night in a large room and Alan watched in obvious amusement as people turned their heads in surprise at the sound of the changed stereo.

Still smirking his usual, gleeful smirk, Alan rocked backward and forward on the heels of his shoes, delighted with the effect he created. He was sincerely hoping that this was the first one of many more to follow that night, but his hopefulness stemmed from his not having any more ideas on how to make another noticeable impact at that moment. There was also another problem, a flaw in his agenda: Her. Every so often, he would cast her a gleeful, but generally friendly look as they stood there, but he could think of nothing interesting to say to her. It was a dilemma he had never had before and he hoped he would never have to endure it again, yet there she was and there he was...without anything to say or anything shocking to do. Perhaps she could make the next move? Yeah, that would happen, well, he would know if it would happen...if he was a mind reader.

Why, all of a sudden, was she so difficult to talk to? Was it because there was nothing at hand with which he could make a fool out of somebody? Did he always have to making an amusing mess to get the attention of his friend? Well, she really wasn't his friend, at least, not in the way she treated him, but he wouldn't classify her as an enemy either, unless...and he cast her another hidden, sideways glance. No, that wasn't it, that was insane, it was impossible. And yet...no, he didn't, he didn't have a crush on Her, did he?

A trace of annoyance flickered across her face as he answered her. She had been looking at him with her face tilted down to observe him kneeling, but when he stood up she was forced to look up. She knew at some point that she was going to regret trailing after him, but she had never expected it to happen as soon as he opened his mouth. Oh, wait. She had. Silly her. She knew she had been desperate.

"How did you know," one hand flying to her mouth, she gasped in mock surprise, giving him a wide-eyed look, "that I learned the alphabet recently? Oh my. I knew it. You really are stalking me in your spare time, aren't you?" She shook her hands to give the impression of worry. Then she dropped her right hand to her hip and left the other one against her side. One eyebrow arched as if to ask him, 'Seriously?'

"In case you don't remember, you gave your name to me only moments after we had met and I hadn't even asked for it. So yes, I did learn your name, dunce." She turned slightly to pull the black curtains back and peek out at the dance floor. The students weren't mulling about so dully anymore. It seemed that the spirit of the dance was picking up with the change of music. Maybe this wasn't such a waste of time after all.

"I commend you on your choice of music. It may very well have saved this sorry excuse of a dance." Flipping strands of her straightened hair out of her eyes, she turned her attention back to him. "Are you quite done here? If so, I think now would be an opportune moment to move it or we'll both be answering to whatever irate staff member that was enjoying the previous tunes."

(( I realized I forgot to include a picture of her dress since I failed to describe it at all. It's probably a good thing I didn't because I couldn't find anything that seemed Lynne enough.... but now I have! Mwahaha! It probably isn't formal enough but, meh. It's definitely something Lynne would wear to something like this.

Alan snorted, a rather odd sound coming from someone with his amount of self-imposed class. But he moved out of the dark corner in which he had been hiding and into the light. For a moment, he said nothing, but he surveyed the assembled people with sparkling blue eyes.

"Staff members?" He confirmed, turning to Her with an expression of incredulity upon his finely-carved features. "I don't see any staff members." He grinned widely, satisfied with the impact he had made on the scene. It was always excellent to know that he was pissing someone off.

But what now? Here he was, standing the middle of the school dance surrounded by happy people, coupled people and in the company of one whose name he didn't even know. She had expressed to him very clearly, that she really didn't have the time for a boyfriend, but then he wondered what she was doing here in the first place. Should he ask her to dance? She probably wouldn't take such an advance on his part very kindly (she most probably wouldn't take any advances from him very kindly at all), so perhaps he could find something, certainly not as entertaining, to do with her. Well, entertaining was only part of the term, because...she was very pretty, especially like this. He shook his head quietly like a dog with water in his ears. He didn't need any of that right now, no, that was foolish and it was certainly not happening, at least, not on his watch.

"You thirsty?" He asked, conversationally, and he was relieved to discover that his voice bore on hint of the thoughts he had been entertaining mere seconds before he had spoken. His brain and its little light bulb ideas was a dangerous thing and he was beginning to feel wary around it.

"They lurk, I promise you." She shook her head with a small smile. Ever the mischief maker, this boy wasn't concerned with the negative consequences of his actions. She grudgingly admired that ability of his. If she had backbone enough to be as meddlesome as Alan, what exactly would she do?

She raised an eyebrow when he shook his head without prompting. What was he thinking about? Should she ask him... or just pretend she hadn't noticed? She mentally shrugged and turned her attention to the scene around him.

Fantastic. They had moved from a dark and secluded place into the bustle of the school dance. Oh how dances made her uncomfortable, and not for the first time she was wondering why she had agreed with her mother and attended such an asinine school function. What benefit did dances have for the general student population anyway? Other than socializing the students, it just seemed like a complete waste of time and money. Shouldn't the administration be dishing money into something more functional than a school dance? Maybe a school-wide show or something?

"You thirsty?" Lynne turned to look back at her... companion, agitated that she had gone off on a wild mental tangent. It was bad enough that he used every opportunity he could to irritate her. She didn't need to leave an opening for him to cause more mayhem.

"Yes. Shall we?"

We used to be just like twins: so in sink,
The same energy, now the dead battery.
'Used to laugh 'bout anything, now you're plain boring.
I should know that you're not gonna change.

“Great, lurking staff members,” Alan muttered as he led the way over to the refreshments table, “just what we need.” He finished, sarcastically and for no particular reason. That was the way he was; he liked to shout out anything that popped into his head without a second thought. It often got him into many sticky situations, but since when had he ever worried about the amount of trouble he would be in for whatever came out of his mouth.

Well, he had become a little more cautious around Lynne, but she was the odd exception. For whatever reason it was, she not only drew him to her in a thoroughly disturbing way, but she made him behave. It wasn’t like she disciplined him, or anything, but there was something about her that kept him from trying to purposely offend her and he could not yet put his finger on the reason.

He crossed the semi-crowed room with long, confident strides with a slightly lazy, self-impressed air about him, the latter which was nearly always present about him. It was just one of those personality traits that he couldn’t seem to get rid of, but it isn’t like he was trying very hard to do so. As they wove their way through the dancing, semi-dancing and standing-awkwardly-together-and-not-saying-anything-to-each other couples, Alan waved randomly as he passed by the students. He didn’t know any of them, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t annoy them as the random and very good-looking guy who was waving at them, and unfortunately for the girls, already following a lady. It was too bad that he was only toying with the idea of asking her to dance with him.

Asking him to engage in such an activity would, in his mind, crossed some sort of invisible, unspoken boundary. Of course he, Alan, Macbeth, had learned to dance at a young age and he could now dance very well, but he was more worried as to if she should accept than her potential refusal. What would he do if she agreed? It wasn’t likely that she would accept, if he even got up the nerve to ask her, but then—hang on, he was having trouble working up nerve for something? That was more disturbing than any one point of his idea…scary.

“Ladies first.” He said, with a wild stab at politeness when they reached the punch table.

You change your mind,
Like a girl changes clothes.
'Cause you're hot and you're cold,
You're yes then you're no,
You're in then you're out,
You're up when you're down.
You're wrong when it's right,
So black when it's white.
We fight, we break up,
We kiss, we make up.
