The snow does not fall in Southern California, but frost and ice do cover the landscape in the early mornings. Your horse will need some extra time to warm up in this December weather and you might want to blanket him or her at night. The average daytime high is 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

``GRADUATING LEVELS

We are no longer employing placement tests: we are now going to follow the Pony Club system of ratings, without the rating tests.

What is Pony Club? Is this site a Pony Club?

Pony Club is an organization that operates world-wide that teaches youth up the age of twenty-five proper riding, care and knowledge relating to equestrian activities. No, this site is not a pony club, but it is modeled after the pony club rating system. Every rider entering the club starts at the lowest level, or at a Unrated (UR) rating. After they have completed some riding lessons, they may take a test to advance to the D1 level, then the D2 level and so on and so forth. On our site, we don't conduct these rating tests. Instead, there is a checklist of classes that must be completed (listed here

Does this mean that my character must start out as a beginning rider?

No, they do not have to start out with no skills. When I joined my Pony Club a few years ago in real life, I had already been riding eleven years, but I still had to start out as a UR rider and work my way up, which was made easy for me because I already knew much of the material. In the character application, you will be asked to write your character's "true riding level" and this is where you will be stating if they are beginning, intermediate, advanced, etc...

I've register my character's true riding level as "advanced rider", but you said that I need more specific rider flaws for him or her. What do you mean by this?

Ah yes, that. You see, if left to their own devices, most people would probably create advanced riders only, leaving the site to be overrun with experienced equestrian characters. Therefore, the staff and I have come up with a method to cut down on this. The more advanced you want your character to be, the more specific riding flaws you have to give him/her or. For example, perching or sucking in show jumping or sew-sawing on the horse's mouth in dressage. Not only this, but if your riser is advanced, you must be conscious of these flaws in the role play. No rider is perfect and the more advanced your character is, the more aware of their flaws they will be.

Here is a list of the specific riding flaws that we are looking for:

Beginning, but experienced

  • At least two
    Intermediate
  • At least six
    Advanced
  • At least eight
    Advanced and experienced
  • At least ten

One more thing, on the topic of specific riding flaws; if the character is only slightly flawed (for example, they only have a slightly nagging leg) or they occasionally get left behind while jumping, then that flaw will only be counted as half of a flaw. Sorry guys, we don't want ten million (or any) Mary-Sues running around: it makes for bad site karma.

``CHARACTER CREATION

Where is the character application form?

It is being rewritten. For those who have already created characters here on this site, you will have to re-create your characters using the new form, but this will be quick and easy, as I have have left your old character forms in place and you can just copy and paste from the major fields. You have fourteen days to do this.

Do I have you use the form that you have provided?

Yes, you do and there will be no getting around that. Please copy and paste the code and not the preview, okay? Use your head. Also, please note that applications must be completed within two weeks of their being posted or they risk deletion.

It says that everyone must use a real person to portray their character. Do I have to too?

Yes and it is also mandatory that you claim the person you use as your character's face claim immediately after they are accepted. You also must provide them with a signature and an avatar depicting them.

I know what my character looks like, but I can't find a face claim for him or her. What do I do?

Ask Jake Alexander. He was lots of ideas for face claims.

My character doesn't have any flaws, so why isn't he or she accepted yet?

Because we won’t accept a Mary-Sue (or if a male, Gary-Stu), or perfect character. Why? Because it’s not fun for you or anyone else if you have a perfect character. Sorry, but it gets really annoying and it’s not realistic. Everyone has flaws in real life and we are a realistic role play. So, no Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus, please!

What are these relationship threads/plots?

The Plots board is basically a place where you can propose a sub-plot, or an idea for drama which involves your character. Example

The Relationships board is explained on another thread which you will find in said sub-board.

What will happen if I don't claim my character's face claim on the appropriate thread?

If you do not claim your character face and someone else comes along and wants to use your character face for their character, then you will have to find a different character face for your character. Also, character faces can only be claimed once. First come, first serve.

How often do characters age?

Once every year upon their birthday. This means that if Jake Alexander was born on October 31st and he was sixteen when he was originally registered (November 2007), then he will turn seventeen on October 31st, 2008.

``HORSES

Am I allowed to play a horse without a human?

No, you are allowed to play the human who owns the horse and therefore, you are indirectly playing the horse. Horses do not talk to each other and they are not "loyal only to one person". They may trust one person more than others, but there must be a reason for that.

Where is the horse creation form?

It is currently being rewritten and yes, your character's horse must be accepted before you role play with him or her.

How many horses can my character have?

As many as they have time for and you can keep active.

If my character is an advanced rider wishing to handle a problem horse right off the bat, what should I do?

There is a short test that is currently being written by the management. If you would like your character to ride a problem horse, then please contact Jake Alexander in order to take it. If you pass, then you get to create and role play the horse as you wish, if you don't, then we'll take it from there.

``CLASSES

I noticed this site has classes. Do I need to take one?

Yes, absolutely, in fact this is so important that they are even listed in the rules. Taking classes is your only hope of advancing up through the levels and they do not require long posts or must time to post in.

I've been riding for years in my real life. Do I still have to take the beginning classes?

Yes, you do and if you know the material in real life, then the classes should be really easy, shouldn't they?

Do I have to take the tests that are offered at the end os some of the classes?

Yes, otherwise we have no way of knowing whether or not you paid any attention or not. Once your test is completed and you have received a passing grade, you will be considered to have completed said class.

What if I fail a class?

Simple, just take the next class in that subject and study harder for the test. Better luck this time.

Do I get to teach a class myself?

This depends on what class it is and your credentials are. If it is a non-equine class and you demonstrate sufficient writing skills and knowledge of the subject as well as a high level of site activity, then yes, we will consider letting you teach.

When it comes to the equine-related classes, we are going to be more particular. Usually, only B riders and up may teach classes and they first must demonstrate that they have a great deal of knowledge in the subject. They also should have access to a horse and (preferably video camera) and should be able to tape themselves or someone else demonstrating what is happening in their class. This, of course, is preferred, not required. If the applicant can get their point across with video from YouTube or another video website, then they might be considered. Also, the character that you teach with will have to be twenty-five years old or older.

Do I have to put all of my characters through the classes in order to move them up in the ratings?

No, you do not. You only need to take classes with one, but you are more then welcome to take classes with your multiple characters. After you have completed a class with one character, all of your characters will have automatically finished that class as well, if you wish.

Once you have completed all three levels of classes, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced, I will be most probably be selecting teachers from among the best students. However, there will be some opening spots to those students who can prove they know what they are talking about in subjects which are not already taught by another. This does not mean you should ask to teach a horse-related class. I will be PMing you if I find you fit for the job. If you are wishing to teach a non-equine related subject or lead a club, by all means, PM me.

What are these textbooks for?

Ignore them: we're getting rid of them.

``ITEMS FOR SALE OR LEASE

How much money does each account have when the game begins?

Each account starts out with $100,000. Yes, I know that's overkill, but it's no fun not having enough money to buy a certain horse or saddle. Just image your character got a huge scholarship.

How do I keep making money?

Making money is pretty easy here: all you have to do is post. Every time you post, your account with gain $20.

I notice that you have to buy certain things before going into select classes? Do I have to buy, a saddle for instance, before I ride my horse in the role play?

No, you do not have to buy tack before riding or interacting with your horse in the role play. However you do need to buy the required items before going to classes which ask for them.
